Revell: 8,8 cm Flak 36 with Sd.Ah. 202

Development of the Flak (anti-aircraft gun) dates back to experiences from WW I. On the grounds of the Versailles Treaty, German engineers worked on such a weapon in designated factories abroad in order to avoid the manufacturing interdiction included in the treaty text.

The aim was to develop a powerful and piercing gun that could hit high flying aircraft and at great distances. Testing the Flak with its 88 mm calibre was done during the Spanish civil war and the experiences gained were transformed into improvements. But the gun’s dreaded fame did not stem from fighting aircraft but from its use against tanks. Even the well-armoured T-34 could not withstand its huge piercing power. Tanks up to a distance of 1,8 kilometer could be destroyed while the firing range was about 14,8 kilometer.
