Nuts and Bolts 28 - Maultier - Review

Volume 28: Gleisketten LKWs “Maultier” (Sd.Kfz. 3)

This issue of Nuts and Bolts is dedicated to the  Maultier family.

The Sd.Kfz.3 was born as a consequence of the campaign in Russia, in particular to the  necessity to face  the muddy ground conditions. In fact, all wheeled vehicles remained stuck.  It served as a tracked vehicle of transport with towing functions.

The authors talk about the historical and industrial  facts of the sd.kfz3 series , as the various producers and the involvement of the Waffen-SS.

We see the details of construction and the differences between: Opel, Ford, Magirus and Mercedes. All accompanied with a great comparison chart.

The Maultier in active service“, gives us a lot of information about the duty and assignments of this vehicle, none the less we have a small but important ‘camouflage and markings‘ paragraph.

On the modelling side we have a few pages dedicated to the subject written by Tony Greenland. There is the usual chart with all possible models and relative scales available.

Seventy pages with about three photos each will provide an idea for any modeling subject . Marder are shown in any possible condition. On snow, towing artillery, fording rivers, in russia, with Flak, on rail cars, damaged, in the mud, ambulance versions, on bridges….

Another 33 pages edited by John L. Rue are full of drawings of various vehicles. Of excellent quality and are rendered with suggestive camouflage. Other pages are devoted to a walk-through of the vehicle photographed by the authors at various museums.

The last 6 pages, edited by Tony Greenland, guide us in the modeling world by building a Maultier ambulance, with a Maultier 2cm Flak, a cargo Maultier KHD, Mercedes and Maultier 4.5 t.
Each of excellent workmanship.
