Dragon: German “Blue Division” Spanish Volunteers Review

The Spanish Volunteer Blue Division is represented in Dragon’s latest 1/35 scale figure set. The box contains four figures fighting in the depths of winter on the Eastern Front, perhaps in the vicinity of Leningrad.

Their poses are vividly crafted as they prepare to spring an ambush on Soviet troops and their accompanying T-34 tanks. On hand they have weapons like antitank mines, bundled grenades, an MP40 and a rifle. They also wield captured Soviet weapons like a PPsH41 submachine gun and DP light machine gun.

This set covers one of the smaller forces participating with the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front, namely the Spanish volunteers of the “Blue Division”. It provides four figures in a motley collection of winter uniforms: two figures in winter parkas (one with a Soviet-style “furashka” cap with Spanish insignia), one on an overcoat, and one in a sheepskin winter overcoat. All are in combat positions, with three of them crouching and one standing with a Soviet DP machine gun…..

The four figures are in very disparate poses, one standing, two kneeling and one sort of lying on his left side. The uniforms they’re wearing are almost as disparate, the standing figure and one of the kneeling ones wearing parka and over trousers, the other kneeling figure having a greatcoat on and the one lying down wearing a sheepskin three-quarter coat. Three figures are wearing helmets, whilst the standing figure is shown wearing the Ushanka type hat…..
