Hobby Boss: VK1602 LEOPARD
Since 1941, plans were made for the development of a new reconnaisance tank based on PzKpfw II Ausf J (VK 1601).
Mock-up was ready in May/June of 1942 and first prototype was to be finished by the September 1st of 1942,but the entire production was cancelled in January of 1943, when the first prototype was still incomplete.
The reason for cancellation was its heavy weight and lack of heavy armament which made the vehicle vulnerable to enemy tanks. Also the fact of Leopard being similar to Panther pointed out that reconnaissance Panther can be developed and produced at lower cost.

Interesting concept vehicle, sits a bit high on those oversized (I’m sure ‘standardized’ Panther) roadwheels but the 80mm frontals and relatively high speed speak well of it.
I’m always surprised at the lack of, you know, _scouting_ gear on these light reconnaissanace tanks. Masted or at least binocular periscope sights, a big radio antenna and a small section of security troops would not be amiss for instance.
And the KWK39 L60 is not a bad weapon as long as you have the high pressure PzGr.40. At 500m that round would defeat about 80mm of plate and at a 1000 almost 40mm both easy side kills for a tank hunter. I myself would rather have a Mk.103 30mm and a Pupchen for general infantry support, particularly in urban fighting, but the important thing here is that the vehicle completely outclassed the equivalent Russian T70 and American M5 Stuart.
The Germans had this obsession with making every tank a panzer killer and that’s just not the way the mission rolled out, even on the Eastern Front.
