Ampersand Allied-Axis Issue 24: Review
Allied-Axis is a 96-page, black-and-white, perfect-bound quarterly. Each issue contains four to six articles featuring a historical introduction followed by extensive captioned period and walk-around photographs, many of which are otherwise unpublished.
This issue features: German 15 Gun,Howitzer M2A1, .50 Caliber Multiple gun Carriage M55, 75mm Pack Howitzer M1A1, Japanese Type 95 Tank, Cannone de 90/53 on Autocarro Pesante Lancia 3/RO
The first ‘item’ under exam on Allied-Axis Issue 24 is the .50 Caliber Multiple gun carriage M55. This weapon system was supplied on different mountings: like the M20 Trailer or on wodden pallets. Most photos show this machine Gun while off of active duty . There is also a good selection of photos regarding details of the M55.
We follow on with the Italian Autocarro Pesante Lancia 3/RO with 90/53 gun. In this case there are not many photos depicting this WW2 subject. None the less there is a very nice photo shot showing the Lancia 3/RO with a bursted barrel and a wrecked cab. Stacked ammunition boxes surround the vehicle in a desertic area. Very suggestive for a diorama. A selection of photos at the Air Defense Artillery Museum show many details of the Lancia, but many parts of the vehicle are missing and all seems painted over.
About the 75mm Pack Howitzer M1A1 all photos of this artillery support weapon have been took ‘in action’. This will give a nice perspective and many ideas on how to build a nice diorama with this subject. Each photo has many Marines surrounding the M1A1, we can also see how the pack howitzer tranported by mules and horses.A good selection of photos show the smaller details.
Let’s move on the Japanese side with the Type 95 Ha-Go light Tank. The section opens with an interesting Knocket Out tank and follows with about 28 photos taken at the Indiana Military Museum. The walktaround will show many details such as the fighting compartment, the engine and more…
Back with the U.S. Artillery with the 105mmHowitzer M2A1. Not many but nice photos show the M2A1 while operating on many fronts usually towed by the GMC CCKW 352 short wheel trucks. There is also an interesting photo showing seven men of the ten men who crewed ‘Glamour Gal’ making an interesting subject for a diorama.
Germany plays last turn with the sFH 15cm Howitzer. Different photos are provided of this subjec, under evidence a photo of a sFH 18 performing routine maintenance. Also some walkaround photos are present to complete the first part of this Howitzer.
