MiniTracks: TRACKSTORY n° 11 – Sumoa S35

The Somua S35 was the best French tank of 1940. It had 40 mm armour and was armed with a formidable 47 mm anti-tank gun, which allowed it to pierce most of the armour in use at the time.

It was a tank built for speed and no other German tank of the day could better it. Used in the cavalry’s Divisions Légère Mécanique in May-June 1940, it saw action from the Belgian plains to the banks of the River Loire. It was used once more in North Africa and Tunisia in the new, re-born tank arm, then took part in the liberation of France in 1944-1945.

Germany was aware of its qualities and re-used more than 300 Somuas in the Panzerwaffe until the end of the war. It also supplied some to its allies. This eleventh volume in the series has been entirely re-written with new texts, photos and profiles.
